Relocation Questions
A couple of weeks ago, a friend who works for a very nice CPA firm invited me to forward my resume, and she would see if anyone in her company would be interested. Courteously, I sent it along, thinking that I would humor my friend, and that would be that.
Wrong again! Two days later I found myself in a phone interview for a very intersting position that would closely match my skill set. Not bad for someone like me who wasn't even looking for a career upgrade. Next week I have an office interview (haven't interviewed in two years, haven't worn a suit since officiating my Great Aunt's funeral 15 months ago).
There are a lot of hurdles to overcome, still, but I've overcome two: the invitation to interview in person, and a willingness to relocate. Moving closer to my mom, dad, and extended family sounds good, and it surely is exciting to be closer to Chicago: Lake Michigan, American Girls Store, Cubs, White Sox, etc., etc., but there are questions.
How quickly can I sell my house? How much can I sell it for?
What about my commitment to teach 1st Grade Sunday School for the 2006-2007 school year?
Do I need to buy a new car? Would clients be impressed with my 1992 Chevy S-10 with 202,000 miles? Could my wife just put the kids in the truck bed while I drive our 2003 Grand Caravan?
What's it like to work for a prestigious CPA firm compared to a small family founded business? How much does it cost to upgrade my professional wardrobe from the shorts, polo, and baseball cap?
Do I have something to contribue to the bigger business world at large?
Life surely is more interesting when you have a family, a mortgage, and a commitment to follow Jesus wherever he leads. One step at a time. Now all I have to do is the best I can at next week's interview
